After Poland regained independence on December 28, 1918, the barracks were taken over by the Polish Army following the outbreak of the Greater Poland Uprising. From that point until the outbreak of World War II, Polish troops were stationed here. During the war, the barracks area was partially destroyed – bombed in September 1939, it was used for decades by military units of the Polish Peoples Republic.
